It is about 1700 miles from Bermuda to Flores, the closest, and most beautiful of the Azores Islands.

We had good winds most of the time and took only 11 days, which was a couple day faster than most other boats at around the same time, although a 90 foot German racing machine called Hexe made the voyage in 7 days.

Several other boats left within a day or two before or after us, and we had a chat by radio every day.

Dolphins came to play in our bow wave several times.

They look even better at night with phosphorescent wakes, but are impossible to photograph then.

We caught up with Argonaut about half way across, so took pictures of each other.

She was cruising along well in a light wind at the time

Photos below and below left were taken by Argonaut about half way between Bermuda and the Azores.

We were coming up on Argonaut from about 2 miles away here.

We are getting away from Argonaut here, with Helen at the helm.

Milvina went on to Flores, later meeting up with Diane and Bill again in Horta.

We trailed a fishing line all the way across, but the best catch was this flying fish who came aboard by himself.  He made a very small but tasty breakfast for one.

A few of the boats sailing at the same time caught worthwhile fish, but we feel that there are less fish in the sea than when we crossed in 1980.

We had several other smaller flying fish on deck from time to time, which is common in these waters. Several squid up to about 10 cm long also landed on deck,  which neither ourselves nor any of four friends had seen before.
