We had planned to sail further
South along the Portuguese coast than Lisbon, but open water and the islands beckoned, so we set sail
for Porto Santo 500 miles SW from Lisbon. An easy three day passage
took us there, in steadily warming weather. Denis and Pam Moonan joined us in Lisbon, so we had lots of crew for the overnight passages. Double click for larger map, then return her with your back button |

Porto Santo is a very small island just East of Madeira. The early
explorers and the Portuguese Empire liked it because it has a good natural
harbour, whereas the larger, more beautiful and much more fertile Madeira
has no good anchorages. We of course appreciated the anchorage too, but our principal interest was the variety of excellent hiking trails. The quality and extend is quite surprising for such a small, relatively poor island. (Double click pictures of full screen view, and return here with your browser's back arrow |
