There are colonies of little auks in
the numerous scree slopes on the N side of Hornsund. The research ornithologists estimate 400,000 of the birds, nesting in every hole big enough for them in the scree, but too small for a fox to get into. The auks are about the size of a human fist. When they fly, it is usually by the hundred, although the auks we see at sea are usually solitary. |
